My Apologies... A Fresh Update.

To all of you who have been following my blog, I want to apologize. I got here, got wrapped up in all of the Hillsong activities and completely neglected to maintain the page. So this is my promise to turn over a new leaf! I have a lot to catch up on since I haven't written about any of my first two months here in Australia... So here's my detailed, albeit brief version of my time spent at Hillsong College, Hillsong Church and Sydney, Australia in general. Hold on tight it's going to be a bumpy ride!

First things first... EVERYTHING IS DIFFERENT! Yes, everything... Steering wheels are on the right side of the car, which drives on the left side of the road, light switches go down to turn on and up to turn off, toilets have their own separate room, Australian food tastes nothing like American food even when you can manage to find the same American brands, December is Summer and July is Winter, french fries are called chips, trash is called rubbish, power outlets are crooked, and a whole list of other things which just don't seem to make sense. However, the truth is I love it!

Australia is absolutely gorgeous! The first week I was here, I got to go into Sydney and see the famous Opera House and Harbor Bridge as you can see in the photos below.

The only unfortunate thing is that it was Winter when I landed so I still haven't gotten the chance to go to the beach. It's been WAY too cold. I never knew that Australia could get this cold!!! Brrrr! But thankfully it's starting to roll into Spring and these last couple of weeks have been warming up enough to bust out the shorts and t-shirts.

Ok, so on to Hillsong Church... The reason I'm here. Oh Em Goodness! I don't even know where to begin. How about the worship? Let me tell you... the people here know how to get excited about God! They dance for Him, clap for Him, jump for Him, cry to Him, shout to Him, lift their hands to Him, and sing their lungs out to Him unashamedly and unabashedly. And the musicians are the most professional instrumentalists and vocalists I've ever seen in a church setting. They strive for excellence every time they get onto the platform! It's a never ending display of joyful sacrifice, offering their gifts of music and worship to God.

The preaching is quite challenging as well! So many different pastors from week to week bringing something fresh to test your faith and convictions. Let me tell you... I have loved it here, but it has not been easy! I have been shaken... Put through the fire of what I truly believe and why I believe it, but have come out the other side refined and stronger than ever before. I have had very obvious God encounters. He showed up in a very personal way one night last month and broke me, threw me to my knees and found me weeping, crying out to Him. I haven't felt God that closely in a long, long time. So yes, it is absolutely fantastic, but it's not all roses. It's real and it's raw, not always sugar coated. And honestly I find myself sometimes questioning what's being taught, which only leads to me to make sure that I find what I believe for myself and stand up for it. This is seriously one of the most demanding times in my life where I must decide what I will believe in. And all I have to rely on is myself and God. But I wouldn't have it any other way.

And finally... College. Yet another place to get challenged in your musical skills and walk with Christ. It's not nearly what I had expected. There is actually very little music involved at this point. They stress the significance of a pure heart, a respectable character and an unyielding integrity. They're more concerned about who you are than what you play. Again, not expected, but such an awesome testimony to the heart of Hillsong. They want to raise up true leaders, not just talented musicians! However, I have to admit, those couple times a week where my tutorial of 15 people come together and make music together are some of my favorite times. The amount of talent I have in my group is unbelievable. Rumor is that I'm part of the "Advanced Class." With all of the talent that I get to observe from week to week, I don't doubt it, and I very much consider it an honor to be placed with them! To check out some of our performances from our first in-class evaluation just click HERE.

Ok, so while that appears to be quite a bit to read, it's only scratching the surface of what has actually gone on here in Australia. I will work on updating a bit more regularly so you can all know some specifics of what everyday life consists of. Love you all. Thanks again so much for all of your prayers and support! And if you want something specific to pray about... I am in desperate need of a job. Funds are starting to be depleted and I am currently unemployed. God will provide, I know it! Just help me let Him know how much I need Him to come through right now. ;) Until next time... With much love.

I made it!

Ok... so I should have updated before I left, but I was freaking out so much that I completely forgot about my blog. With that said...

I made it to Sydney!!!

I've actually been here for 24 hours now, but again, I was so jet lagged I didn't think about blogging. But here I am now, writing to all of you out there! =) (Sorry. Still not completely coherent, so this may appear as absent minded garble.) But anyway... I landed yesterday at about 7:45am. (Keep in mind, I'm 14 hours ahead.) Took about an hour to get through customs and get my bags. Thank God I got all of my luggage! My guitar was also safe and sound! I then headed out of the airport, met up with my bus driver, and took the scenic route back to Hillsong Church. We went over the famous harbor bridge and saw the even more famous opera house! Australia is beautiful! I wish you could all come see it!

So we made it to the church and dude... This place is awesome! Not nearly as large as I thought, but still a huge church. So after signing in, we just hung out and met a lot of new people, current students as well as other new intakes and my new roommate! Then after a couple hours, a group of us went to the local shopping mall where we stocked up on the essentials... bed stuff, shower stuff, groceries, phones, etc. By this time, I was so wiped out I just wanted to go to sleep, but it was only about 4 in the afternoon. So we headed down to the local coffee shop and grabbed a mocha to help me keep my eyes open as long as possible. Unfortunately, I only made it to about 8:30 before crashing.

So that was my first day... I promise it was much more exciting than I expressed. But again... after flying for 24 hours and being in such a different time zone, it was difficult mustering up the energy to remember all the details. Sorry. I promise to do better in the future. =) But as for now, I have another day of preparation ahead of me, so I must go for now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of those who helped get me here. You have no idea how much this means to me and I will be forever in your debt.

Support Update

Hello everyone. I want to say a big thank you to all of you who have given. I received way more than I thought I would for just the first month and now I'm only about $1000.00 away from sending off for my official certificate of enrollment! I have two families committing to sponsor me for the duration of my trip and boatloads more who gave a one time gift. And a special thank you to everyone for committing to pray with and for me. Each of you are so special, and I greatly appreciate everything. To those of you who gave, be looking in the mail soon for your Thank You letters. I want you to know just how important all of this means to me.

As for March, I have a couple things lined up. On Sunday the 21st at 8:00am, my home church, Oak Street Baptist, will be putting on a fund raising breakfast in the gym. Please invite everyone you know to be there and enjoy a good southern breakfast for any size donation. Also on the 21st at Calvary Baptist Church, I will be leading their evening service and explaining all the details of my trip. We'll be having a time of praise and worship, maybe a short word, and a question and answer time. Please come out and hear all about it!

I'm Going To Hillsong College!

That's right! On July 10th I'll be flying out, headed to Sydney, Australia to study under some of the greatest ministers and worship leaders of the day. I found out right before Christmas that I had been accepted to the college and have been in a frenzy trying to raise support in order to go. Hillsong doesn't actually offer any type of finanicial aid or student loans, so I have been asking friends, family, and churches to partner with me and to help relieve some of the financial burden. Chances are if you are reading this, you received a letter from me, asking for just that. You obviously are, or were, a big part of my life and influence(d) me in some way. So if you are stopping by to read this, I want to say thank you... Thank you for being a friend. Thank you for joining with me in prayer. Thank you for giving your hard earned money to send me off to do God's will for my life. Thank you for helping me chase my dream and aspire to be a worship leader of the highest quality, reaching as many as possible for His kingdom. Thank you for aiding me in living out what it means to be a "follower of Christ." Hope to hear from you soon. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call me at 423-213-1928 or email me at xchris.vaughnx@gmail.com
